Sedation for Nervous Patients

We try to create a relaxing and safe environment for our patients. While they are undergoing certain procedures, we ensure that they are well-sedated particularly those dental phobic patients. Simply, sedation treatments are provided as an option for nervous patients.

Dental phobia, in general, may manifest itself through fear of a treatment, environment or dentist. Dental phobia (and dental anxiety) is a common phenomenon wherein patients experience mild to severe nervousness when visiting a dentist for various reasons. Other than past experiences, dental phobia can be also triggered by fear of needles or drill.

On the other end, dental treatments today are so advanced that they can be administered pain-free. In providing safe and effective dental care to our patients, we offer relaxation treatments that can calm the nerves. Sedation treatments that we provide are:

  • Conscious sedation
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation
  • Inhalation sedation

Sedation treatment can be oral, intravenous or inhaled. Conscious sedation aims at relaxing the patients prior to the treatment. While their consciousness is maintained, they will not feel any pain while the treatment is ongoing and even after a few hours following the treatment. Deep sleep sedation is also possible where the patient, specifically those who cannot be calmed, will be unaware of the entire procedure.

Other techniques in making the patients feel more relaxed throughout the procedure are:

  • Meditation
  • Talk therapy
  • Listening to music

Nonetheless, it is also possible to combine a sedation treatment with personalized techniques to feel more relaxed. Your dentist will provide further guidance on this.

Basically, sedation is required since anxiousness can lead to increased risk of harm not only for the dentist, but more so for the patient. Sedation treatments lower such risk for the patients to receive dental care in the safest, calmest manner possible. Neglecting dental care because of dental fear is detrimental to a patient’s oral as well as overall health.
