The bad news is that no matter how much you maintain a good oral hygiene to keep your gums healthy, it may not be enough. This is due to lifestyle choices like poor nutrition and smoking, weakening overall gum health of the individual. Other factors that lead to gum problems development include improper teeth brushing, plaque buildup and even taking certain medications.

We encourage our patients to engage into preventive dentistry. This includes regular checkups that usually include gum screening to detect problems. In this way, we can ensure that you are receiving the care that you require in maintaining healthy gums.

We employ professional methods to clean, scale and polish hard to reach areas to remove tartar and plaque buildup. All of these methods are created so that bacterial colonization in and around the gum pockets will be prevented. For one, bacterial formation can be prevented since plaque would not be able to attach to clean, smooth teeth surfaces easily. Such processes thus reduce the risks of gum diseases.

As such, early intervention can only be administered through gum screening that occurs during a dental checkup. Early intervention can addresses gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis, both of which are serious gum diseases

Gingivitis and Gum Disease

Characterised by redness and swelling, gingivitis refers to gum inflammation. Sometimes, the gums also bleed specifically when brushing or eating. Other symptoms to watch out for are foul breath, gum recession, and abscesses.

Periodontitis and Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis, when left untreated, can result in gum tissue infection not only on the surrounding of the teeth, but also on the periodontal ligament. Such ligament is the supporting structure of the teeth with our jawbone. When gingivitis worsens, this can lead to breaking down of gum tissue, causing the loosening of the tooth or teeth. If this situation is not addressed immediately, the infection may spread on the root canals. Gradually, the affected tooth or teeth will become looser.

Gum Problems Treatment

Essentially, regular dental visits are needed in maintaining healthy gums. During a visit, your dentist may identify gum problem symptoms that are otherwise not known to you.

The dentist may be able to prescribe an antibiotic to treat infection. If the infection has already reached the pulp and roots of the tooth or teeth, the dentist may perform root canal treatment. If needed, the dentist may also provide tooth restoration like inlay or crown, which can boost tooth strength. Again, if required, the dentist may extract a tooth or two. Patients are presented with treatment options including dentures, bridges, and implants.
